Disinformation about migration chapter features in World Migration Report 2022

03 December 2021

The chapter, Disinformation about migration: an age-old issue with new tech dimensions, was written by Fujo researchers Eileen Culloty, Jane Suiter and Sara Creta, along with Itayi Viriri from the International Organisation on Migration (IOM).

The chapter examines the factors shaping disinformation about migration in terms of society, politics, media and technology. It outlines best practices in building public resilience to disinformation and the major insights from current research, with reference to major gaps in our understanding of disinformation and the current barriers to advancing this work.

It also highlights evidence and practical examples from around the world and from a variety of contexts and identifies recommendations and implications for policymakers and other stakeholders seeking to counteract disinformation generally and about migration specifically.

IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all, with a presence in over 100 countries, and supporting 174 member states to improve migration management.

It has been producing its flagship world migration reports every two years. The World Migration Report 2022, the eleventh in the world migration report series, has been produced to contribute to increased understanding of migration and mobility throughout the world. This new edition presents key data and information on migration as well as thematic chapters on highly topical migration issues, and is structured to focus on two key contributions for readers:

Both the chapter and an interactive version of the full report are available on the IOM website.
